This is the largest market in Lome. Vibrant, noisy and like its name grand in so many ways. It is the typical African market where traders are selling almost everything from tropical fruit and vegetables, coconuts, spices, exotic pepper, paprika, potatoes, yams, cassava, tomatoes, monster avocados, groundnuts in bottles, sugar canes, canned food, dried fish, African textiles, cheap clothes made in China, leatherwares, household goods and machinery, chicken, goats, bushmeat, furniture, coffins, electronics, pottery, paintings, traditional medicine against lost memory, bed wetting, poverty, to improve potency.
In the midst of colours and activities, young boys push goods in overloaded wooden wheelbarrows, huge market women called „Mama Benz“∗ usually attired in bold patterned african dresses advertise their articles, bargain with customers, watch their young assistants, count money, have a chat with their sisters or sleep behind their stands. You may catch sight of bare chested women wearing white skirts and carrying commodities on their head. These are Voodoosis (novices of the voodoo cult) working for traders.
∗ Mama Benz = Huge market women who invest the money they made in a Mercedes Benz. After having affairs with their young and handsome drivers they often get rid of their lazy and useless husbands.
